Providing housing, employment, health and other reintegration support

How We Support Veterans

Volunteers of America has been helping veterans from as far back as the Civil War who are struggling to reintegrate into civilian life. The Greater New York affiliate supports more than 700 veterans each year, and is one of the largest providers of residential services for veterans in New York City. We offer a continuum of care to veterans who are homeless and those at imminent risk of becoming homeless that is congruent with the high level of support and respect these men and women deserve.

We are sensitive to the complex and individual struggles of veterans and provide a full range of services focusing on both acute and long-term issues — from crisis intervention and counseling, to budget and money management, housing, employment counseling, and recreation. Our program staff also coordinate primary medical care services, including mental health and substance use disorder treatment for clients. Our network of support helps veterans overcome the barriers that prevent them from living stable, secure lives.

Our continuum of care for veterans includes:

Veterans may enter the continuum of care at any point. If you know veteran who is homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless, call 718-993-3564 or email VOA4Vets@voa-gny.org

Or, if you're a veteran considering suicide, or are concerned about a veteran who is, please call the Veterans Crisis Hotline at 1-800-273-8255

November 11 is Veterans Day

While VOA-Greater New York honors the sacrifice of veterans every day, we pay special tribute each November on Veterans Day, giving thanks to those who served our country.

Watch a video about Battle Buddy Bridge®, our innovative program that trains veterans to become peer support specialists:

"VOA was like a breath of fresh air. The staff and volunteers assisted me with reaching my personal milestones. I am eternally grateful."

-John Saunders, a formerly homeless veteran who now has his master's degree from Columbia University.
