President & CEO Myung Lee to step down at end of 2022 to pursue other interests

NEW YORK, Dec. 22, 2022 — The Volunteers of America-Greater New York Board of Directors announced the appointment of Dan Lombardo as interim president & CEO. This followed the mutual decision of the Board with President & CEO Myung J. Lee to step down at the end of 2022, after a successful tenure at the organization, to pursue other interests. The board also announced the launch of a national search to find the organization’s next CEO.
Lombardo has been president & CEO of the Volunteers of America Delaware Valley/Southern New Jersey affiliate for 34 years. He will continue in that role while also guiding VOA-GNY with the support of VOA-GNY’s experienced senior executive team. The team includes Julia A. Oliver, executive vice president & chief operating officer and Noelle Withers, senior vice president, programs, as VOA-GNY continues its 125-year mission of helping the region’s most vulnerable in their time of need.
Under Lombardo’s leadership, the Delaware Valley/Southern New Jersey affiliate has annual revenue over $45 million, 13,000 clients, and more than 400 employees. “VOA-Greater New York has an extremely knowledgeable and dedicated executive team, and a long track record of providing services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the New York region,” said Lombardo. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and furthering the organization’s success.”
Under Lee’s leadership, VOA-GNY and its team of talented executives have strengthened its mission and services to the region’s most vulnerable residents. Accomplishments include the board and management team’s collaboration in creating a new strategic plan with a goal to end homelessness by 2050, and the launch of several new programs, including a first-of-its-kind partnership with Safe Living Space that screens domestic violence shelter victims for possible brain injury; expanded its commitment to developing affordable housing; and increased shelter capacity for families and children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence.
VOA-GNY has also increased private and unrestricted donations that allow greater funding for the implementation of new pilot programs and services, and centralized and strategically aligned resources to where they have the greatest impact. With increased funding, the organization is also stronger than ever, serving more than 30,000 individuals and families annually and increasing capacity to be able to house more than 4,000 people a night.
“The past two-and-a-half years have underscored to me the critical role that VOA-GNY has played in providing much-needed social services to our region,” said Lee. “Alongside the board and the leadership team, I am proud of the work we have done.”
Lee added, “VOA-GNY continues to do essential work to support our neighbors in need every day while building on a strategy to strengthen our organization and our people. With the strategic plan well underway, an engaged board of directors and strong management team at VOA-GNY, the board and I agree that the timing is right for a new leader to guide VOA-GNY into a new chapter.”
The VOA-GNY board is grateful to Lee for her dedication and leadership, particularly in the midst of the challenges of a global pandemic and appreciates all she has done to help advance VOA-GNY’s vision of ending homelessness. The board wished Lee all the best on her next endeavor.
A committee has been formed by the VOA-GNY board to oversee a search to find the organization’s next president & CEO to build upon its success. The organization’s talented leadership and support team are in place and will continue to oversee the critical services VOA-GNY provides the region’s most vulnerable populations every day.
