It's a Family Affair: The Kerns

For the Kern family, volunteering isn't just important, it's inter-generational. Jonathan and Beth Kern and their children, Sarah, Ben and Adam, are the second and third generations of the Kern family to forge a connection with Volunteers of America, continuing a tradition started by Jonathan's father and his involvement with Volunteers of America-Colorado.

"What we really like about volunteering with VOA is that it’s not just about donating money," says Beth Kern. "Although monetary donations are crucial and we try to do our part, taking an active role is a good way of modeling Jonathan and my values to our children."

Committed supporters of VOA, the Kerns have hosted holiday parties for veterans residing in VOA's Patriot House and at our residence for people living with HIV/AIDS.

"We have enjoyed meeting the residents, sitting down with them over dessert and having conversation. One resident of Patriot House even taught Adam some breakdancing moves. We’ve learned a lot from the staff who work in those residences, and have gained appreciation for the residents who have shared with us a bit about their life experiences.”
